The Practicalities

Coaching programmes typically run over a 6 - 12 month period of time to effect sustainable change.  Coaching sessions are usually conducted on a one-to-one, face-to-face basis, with each meeting lasting one and a half or two hours, on a fortnightly or monthly basis.  Coaching is normally conducted at the client's work premises.

Who Can Provide Coaching?
Sometimes coaching can by provided by a suitably trained colleague, and an internal coaching system, with professional training and supervision, is to be recommended.  However, this is not a job for the enthusiastic amateur.  A coach should have undertaken lengthy study in psychology as well as their own personal development.

The benefits of an external professional coach include confidentiality, impartiality, and a depth of psychological/ therapeutic training and experience.  The latter is important in order to a) prevent and/or contain unexpected vulnerability in the coachee; and to b) coach at a deeper level, challenging and shifting deeply rooted behavioural patterns (and therefore managerial styles) effectively.

The issue of confidentiality becomes more important at senior levels.

A coach should have experience and knowledge of both the business community and that of psychology.
